This option is the first day of the RYA Level 1 Start Dinghy Sailing course. You will cover everything that you would on that first day of the course, which will include simulator work on the land, small pieces of theory to help you understand the workings of a boat on the water, but predominantly will get you out on the water and give plenty of practice time to get a feel for sailing and whether it is something you would like to pursue.
This introduction to dinghy sailing - RYA Start Dinghy Sailing Course - has been created specifically for those of you that are new to the sport of dinghy sailing. The course is designed to get you on the water using modern, single-handed dinghies, and using RYA coaching techniques.
Two 5 hour sessions will see you learn to sail single-handed dinghies and will allow you to confidently rig your boat, control power and direction, tack and gybe through the wind to move yourself around the lake, and perform a capsize drill. Alongside the numerous practical skills there will be a range of background knowledge covered during the course to give you everything you need to "Start Dinghy Sailing".
The aim is to equip you with a variety of skills and theory to enable you to sail competently around a triangular course. Plenty of time is spent helming your boat under the careful guidance of our instructors.
This RYA Basic Skills Course is for those that have completed the Start Dinghy Sailing course, or those with some sailing experience who wish to advance their skills. This course moves on from the level 1 by teaching more advanced techniques in a variety of craft. There is a natural movement towards a skillful and considered application of the skills and theory learnt on the Start Dinghy Sailing course, as well as an introduction to a few further "Basic Skills", whilst developing a greater understanding and implementation of the all-important five essentials - the key to good boat handling.
Here you will gain more experience in crewboat sailing, with time spent as helm and crew as you consolidate the basic skills of the Five Essentials for sailing - balance, trim, centreboard, sail setting and course made good; you will also be introduced to more advanced boat handling skills such as man overboard recovery and coming alongside; this course focuses on getting the best performance from your boat in a variety of conditions.
The RYA Better Sailing course is a direct stepping stone from Level 2 towards the advanced dinghy sailing modules. It is designed to progress you in two main ways, a) by polishing and improving the skills previously learnt in Start Sailing Level 1 and Basic Skills Level 2, accompanied by a furthering of your theoretical background knowledge, and b) to introduce a selection of the dinghy sailing modules available upon completion of the Better Sailing Level 3 course to give you a taste of what each module would involve and help inform your decision of how to progress your sailing going on from the Better Sailing Level 3 course. Condition dependent, we usually aim to give you a flavour of seamanship skills, spinnaker sailing and racing modules.
The Better Sailing course is a great course for all those sailors looking to consolidate and enhance their Basic Skills and progress further into their sport.
This RYA Seamanship Skills course builds on the RYA Better Sailing Level 3 course and includes fine tuning those five essentials and boat handling manoeuvres. It expects the sailor upon completion to sail in a seamanlike manner and to be capable of making seamanship decisions.
We focus the sailor's attention on sailing with a partner as crew and helm in a crew boat; as they learn to competently handle crew boats with main sail and jib; gain the theoretical knowledge to enable the student to make seamanlike decisions; cover a greater depth in already familiar areas such as rigging, launching and recovery; and learn high level skills such as sailing tight circles and sailing rudderless.
RYA Sailing with Spinnakers helps sailors advance themselves by opening up the exciting world of spinnaker sailing to them. It will cover everything you need to know, from how to rig a spinnaker up, through to the all-important hoist and drop procedure and how to sail once it is raised. The course will naturally introduce new theoretical information such as is necessary to enable successful spinnaker sailing and will look at the additional safety considerations, especially the specific changes to the capsize recovery technique when capsized with a spinnaker. The course is predominantly water-based and aims to give you a taste of the thrill of spinnaker sailing as well as providing you with all the tools you need to go away and continue safely and confidently without an instructor.
